Onset of winter in the Swiss Plateau on Thursday!
A warm front from a low over the Bay of Biscay will reach us from the west on Thursday night, bringing widespread snow in the Swiss Plateau, especially in German-speaking Switzerland, and thus an onset of winter. Before the snowfall turns to rain, we can expect around 5 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow. On Friday, the low pressure system will move to northern Italy and bring further precipitation in the Swiss Plateau, mostly in the form of rain. During the night to Saturday, cold air will flow in again, causing the snow line to drop to low altitudes. Further large amounts of fresh snow are expected, especially in the Alps and particularly in Graubünden.

November far too wet and sunny in the north
November, which will soon be coming to an end, was clearly too wet and lacking in sunshine in the north; locally, it was the wettest and least sunny November since measurements began. In the south, on the other hand, there was clearly too little precipitation and significantly more sunshine than normal under the protection of the Alps. Overall, temperatures were about normal, with the Swiss Plateau being a little too mild and the mountains a little too cold.

Further large increase in fresh snow in sight in the northern Alps
After there was a lot of fresh snow in the northern Alps from around 600 to 800 meters, especially on Friday and Saturday, new snow is being added in batches this week. A lot of snow will fall again in the northern Alps, especially on Tuesday night and on Tuesday and Thursday. In addition, the last days of the meteorological fall are very cold.

The stuff winter dreams are made of
When snowflakes trickle down from the sky, children and winter sports enthusiasts are happy. Snow is generally less popular with drivers. Snow transforms the landscape and appears peaceful, but this form of precipitation has a lot to offer. Snow crystals are the basis, and each one is unique.

Lots of fresh snow in the Northern Alps
From Friday until well into the coming week, the Alpine region will be subject to a strong northerly current, with the jet stream running right over the Alps. This northerly current will bring cold and intermittently moist air to the north side of the Alps and accumulate on the mountains. This will result in considerable amounts of fresh snow over several days!

Frost – Climatology and different characteristics
Next night, many places in the Swiss Plateau will see frost for the first time this fall. How does this compare with previous years or the climate norm and when was the earliest frost recorded since measurements began? These questions and more information about the frost can be found in the following MeteoBlog.

Around the first snow in the lowlands
When is the earliest date for the first measurable snowfall in some large cities in the lowlands and in the deep Alpine valleys? When does the first snow fall on average? And how does it look like this year and in the future? Find out more below.

Next very mixed week in November
November is known as a moody month and has lived up to its name so far. What has been largely absent so far is high pressure. There are no signs of a prolonged period of fine weather this week either, although there will be high pressure weather on Thursday. However, this will result in the first widespread air frost in the Swiss Plateau on Thursday morning. The high pressure won't last long, however, and the coming weekend will see largely low-pressure conditions again.

weather Switzerland
Lots of clouds, sun only in between
A lot of fresh snow will fall on the mountains today, with strong northerly foehn winds in the south. During the night and tomorrow morning, an intermediate high will have a temporary effect, then the next fronts will follow. So there can still be no talk of calmer and more stable late fall weather...

Storm Frederico
After the large amounts of precipitation over the last few days, the focus is now temporarily shifting to the wind. On Friday night, a small storm depression will move eastwards over France and Germany. After that, our weather will remain dynamic and dominated by low pressure.
