A lot of dynamics in the weather kitchen

Things are set to remain exciting in the weather forecast over the next few days. After a classic "blue at the top, gray at the bottom" Thursday, things will become more dynamic from tomorrow. Various disturbances will reach us from Friday to the middle of next week. The increasingly mild air masses will cause the snow line to rise. This could become a problem, especially in the first half of next week.

From rain to snow again this evening!

Yesterday, Thursday, some snow fell in the Swiss Plateau of German-speaking Switzerland, although it increasingly rained into the white splendor. Today, more rain will fall during the day, around evening, and by nightfall at the latest, the snow line will drop back to the Swiss Plateau in German-speaking Switzerland. The snowfall will continue at times during the night. Tomorrow, Saturday, the snowfall will increasingly retreat to the foothills of the Alps. Overall, a few centimetres of fresh snow will fall in the Swiss Plateau of German-speaking Switzerland by tomorrow evening, most of it in eastern and central Switzerland.

Some thaw everywhere from tomorrow Tuesday

Today, Monday, temperatures in the east will remain frosty throughout the day, with the exception of the foehn valleys, while the west will see a thaw. From tomorrow, Tuesday, the maximum temperatures in the lowlands will rise above the frost line, so that thawing weather will prevail and the snow will slowly melt a little. In terms of weather, the next week will be often cloudy in the north, with only a lot of sunshine expected in the mountains on Thursday. There will be very little precipitation in the east. In the west and to a lesser extent in the south, however, there will be heavier precipitation, especially on Friday.

November far too wet and sunny in the north

November, which will soon be coming to an end, was clearly too wet and lacking in sunshine in the north; locally, it was the wettest and least sunny November since measurements began. In the south, on the other hand, there was clearly too little precipitation and significantly more sunshine than normal under the protection of the Alps. Overall, temperatures were about normal, with the Swiss Plateau being a little too mild and the mountains a little too cold.

Onset of winter in the Swiss Plateau on Thursday!

A warm front from a low over the Bay of Biscay will reach us from the west on Thursday night, bringing widespread snow in the Swiss Plateau, especially in German-speaking Switzerland, and thus an onset of winter. Before the snowfall turns to rain, we can expect around 5 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow. On Friday, the low pressure system will move to northern Italy and bring further precipitation in the Swiss Plateau, mostly in the form of rain. During the night to Saturday, cold air will flow in again, causing the snow line to drop to low altitudes. Further large amounts of fresh snow are expected, especially in the Alps and particularly in Graubünden.
