Still on course for a record in 2024
2023 was the warmest year in recorded history, but so far it has been clearly surpassed by 2024. The first four months seamlessly join a series of now eleven consecutive months with record temperatures. The oceans have also never been as warm as they are now since satellite-based observations began.
weather Switzerland
Unstable at first, quite sunny and warm from the Ascension day onwards
This week, the weather will be split into two parts: Today, Monday, and tomorrow, Tuesday, it will be often cloudy and partly wet with temperatures not too high at mostly 12 to 16 degrees. After Wednesday as a transition day, it will be quite sunny over the extended Ascension weekend with only a slightly increased tendency to showers and thunderstorms in some areas on Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will reach a warm 20 degrees or more from Ascension Day. This means that there is little in the way of excursions over the Ascension weekend.

Hatschi – pollen season 2024
Later than last year, but much earlier than usual, the pollen season began in the last quarter of January with the stronger blossoming of the hazel and alder trees and thus the time of suffering for pollen allergy sufferers in the north too. The hazel and alder blossom period came to an end towards the end of March. However, the ash and birch pollen season was in full swing in April. There was also oak and sycamore pollen as well as pollen from conifers. At the end of April, the flowering of the main pollen allergen, grasses, also began in the central plateau. Their pollen will accompany us over the coming weeks and months until late summer, causing red eyes and runny noses for allergy sufferers.
weather Switzerland
Changeable, but not unfriendly

May makes everything new – what is possible
As in April, a lot is possible in terms of weather in May: it ranges from snow and frost to midsummer heat. In addition, the first heavy thunderstorms often occur as a result of the higher position of the sun and the decreasing snow cover of the mountains.

Early summer and late winter - April with extreme temperature contrasts
The first half of April was exceptionally warm, with an excess of almost 5 degrees over the whole of Switzerland! There were also an unusually high number of summer days and even all-time April temperature records in some places. However, this was followed by a sharp drop in temperature in the middle of the month and an unusually long period of cold weather with snow down to low altitudes and even frost in some places. From one extreme to the other! Nevertheless, April 2024 will be too mild overall.
weather Switzerland
First early summer with Sahara dust, then changeable
As is typical for this time of year, temperatures are currently on a bit of a rollercoaster. After last week's cool phase, the pendulum is now swinging in a mild/warm direction and April 2024 is saying goodbye to early summer. Saharan dust has a somewhat dampening effect. This will be washed out again by rain showers in the second half of the week...

How high are the clouds?
In addition to wind, temperature and humidity, other parameters are also monitored and determined in meteorology. These include the type of cloud cover and its lower limit, as well as the aerosol content of the air. The corresponding instrument is the ceilometer.
