Lolita brachte Schwung in die Wetterküche

by MeteoNews AG

A mixed Holy Week, partly foehn Easter

The weather in Holy Week until Good Friday is very mixed: After a fairly sunny start with a foehn on Tuesday in the northern Alpine valleys, it will be unsettled on Wednesday and Thursday and partly wet, especially on Wednesday. Rain is already falling in the south on Tuesday. On Good Friday, it will remain dry with foehn winds in the north and some sunshine, especially in the east, but it will be cloudy and repeatedly wet in the south. The Easter weekend in the north will be dominated by the foehn wind with friendly weather and very mild to warm air, while in the south it will often be rainy with congestion. On Easter Monday, it is also likely to be wet in the north as the foehn breaks down.

Regionally very different Easter weather

Over Easter, the weather in Switzerland varies greatly from region to region: The friendliest and warmest weather will be from Good Friday to Easter Sunday with partly stormy foehn winds in the Alpine valleys in the east, while the worst and coolest with partly heavy precipitation will be in the south. The west is in between with changeable and occasionally wet weather. Widespread precipitation is to be expected on Easter Monday.

Still unsettled spring weather

After today's friendly and at least partly sunny Thursday under the influence of an intermediate high pressure system following the dissipation of fog, clouds will dominate in the north until Monday and the sun will struggle. There will be downpours, especially on Saturday night, and rain in the course of Monday. After that, a ridge of high pressure in the middle of the week will provide stabilization, albeit probably only temporarily.

Low pressure weather over the weekend

Until the weekend, our weather will essentially be determined by a low pressure system located in the nearby Atlantic/Great Britain. It will bring us a lot of precipitation in the south, with southerly to south-westerly high winds at the southern slope of the Alps until Saturday, while in the north it will bring a foehn wind and only a little rain. In the night to Sunday, the foehn will break down and it will also be wet in the north. On Sunday, the precipitation will move eastwards again relatively quickly. At the beginning of the coming week, the air pressure will rise, but initially the air will still be somewhat humid, but from the middle of the week it will be drier again, especially at higher altitudes. From Sunday, especially from Tuesday, temperatures will be somewhat lower in the north, but without it becoming exceptionally cool.

Together with 2019/2020, mildest winter since start of measurements!

The meteorological winter that ended yesterday (December to February) was around 2.7 degrees too mild compared to the long-term average from 1991 to 2020. This makes the winter of 2023/2024, together with the winter of 2019/2020, the mildest since measurements began in 1864. With the exception of February, there was too much precipitation, with December in particular being significantly too wet. Finally, the sun shone less frequently than normal in every winter month, with February in particular being far too cloudy.

AMOC – the heating of Europe

Global flow patterns exist not only in the atmosphere, but also in the oceans. These span the entire world and connect all the oceans with each other. In addition to winds and the Coriolis force, thermohaline circulation is the main driving force behind this. A new study on the possible overturning of the AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) means that it is now back in the headlines. But what exactly is this about?

An ever earlier spring – good or bad?

One of the mildest winters on record is having an impact on nature: As has often been the case in recent years, nature has woken up very early, which is also reflected in the fact that hay fever symptoms have been on the rise for some time now and many spring flowers are already blooming in gardens and parks. Winters are becoming milder and milder as a result of climate change, which means that nature is waking up earlier and earlier and the growing season is being extended. This has a variety of effects, both positive and negative.

Cheers to high pressure system Frank!

Today, Friday, a high pressure system over the nearby Atlantic named Frank will slowly dry the air in our area and then largely determine our weather over the weekend until next Tuesday. Apart from patches of fog or high fog in the lowlands, it will bring lots of sunshine and temperatures well above average for the time of year, especially on the northern edge of the Alps. There will be very good winter sports weather on the mountains, although a strong north-westerly wind may be a nuisance. From the middle of the week, the weather will become more variable, but it will remain mild until Saturday. After that, there are signs of a marked cooling.

Stormy start to November with storm Ciarán in Western Europe

Tomorrow Wednesday, a big storm named Ciarán will form over the Atlantic under rapid strengthening, which will subsequently move over southern England to the North Sea during the night on Thursday and on Thursday, bringing gale-force winds of up to about 150 km/h in parts, especially in southern England and northern France, and here especially in Brittany. Associated with this are also in the western English Channel and on the west coast of France also high waves of over 10 meters in places.

World Meteorology Day and 150th anniversary of an international meteorological community

World Meteorological Day takes place every year on March 23. With the convention of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which came into force in 1950, the cooperation of a wide range of nations should lead to more reliable weather forecasts. This year, World Meteorological Day takes place under the motto "the future of weather, climate and water over generations".
